A lesson plan for students suffering from general anxiety disorder and a specific reading disability.
I found this assignment incredibly difficult to process. Creating a lesson plan and structure for me is something that requires data for accuracy in impact. So working with all the hypotheticals involved was very difficult since such a vast array of criteria impacts every lesson plan.
The core questions the case study left me with are as follows:
What is the time frame for learning intervention?
How many students are in general education class? (Teacher's allocatable time) - Larger class or smaller; homeroom class all day or several teachers
How many students are in the special education class? (Teacher's allocatable time) - One on one interventions or group classes; similar conditions or only similar course relation
Expectations on class length and frequency?
Are materials and resources available at the school or classroom, if so, to what extent? - lower-income schools versus a higher-income school
Lesson plan format guide as per school requirements? - I've been writing lesson plans for years now, and every class, school and subject requires a different approach as far as I’ve experienced. (internal panic at this point)
What additional information on the students progress, tracking, abilities, and current approaches to managing conditions can their teacher provide? - up to now, my prior research here has mentioned at length the amount of data needed to effectively provide intervention strategies for the students in question (I'm probably overthinking at this point)
With all of that affecting my approach, I began creating a lesson structure that I would use as a "Demo" class approach. It needs to be modified accordingly to the knowledge gained from being in the real-world environment and data sourced through the process.
I decided to examine the LD Case Study - Middle School, Diagnosis: SLD Reading (Dyslexia) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. This one resonated with me as it is incredibly relatable to me on a personal level.
I began by breaking the case study into key points:
6th-grade learner struggling in language arts class – Language arts lesson
Reads with fluency and accuracy struggles with comprehension
Struggles with summary and inference
Dislikes reading and shows anxiety with reading focused assignments
Strong working memory and average processing speed
Verbal comprehension is low average
Can memorize and recite and is a sound decoder
Dealing with anxiety with reading
I established that I need to help with his anxiety, visualization skills, and new vocabulary.
So I put on my teacher hat and created a lesson plan that should meet the criteria.
